Augmented reality is an area which great potential, and the power to be truly transformative. Microsoft's HoloLens, which offers something very distinct, is an excellent example, and the mind reels at what HoloLens could become in a couple of years with a lot more polish and hardware refinement. But to suggest the kind of AR Pokemon Go employs, using just your smartphone, is currently experiencing some watershed instant, is nearly certainly overstating the case.

Pokemon Go has gone straight to the top of the gaming charts in the US and Australia, where it was first released at the start of July. The smartphone-based game has already been downloaded by almost 6 percent of US Android users. Zombie apocalypse place-based MMO Please Remain Calm isn't shut down, but does not appear to have a really active user base (and programmers appear to have turned their focus to Halcyon 6, a retro space sim, instead.
Pokemon Go has finally been formally released in the UK, for both iOS and Android. No longer must you bound through sideloading hoops to catch them all.
The stream originators over at HackNY say they understand that this method of playing is technically against the game's terms of service. "If Niantic or Nintendo wish to ban the account that we're playing with we'd comprehend, but we suppose they know this is all in good fun," they write in the stream's description.
As much as folks are enjoying Pokemon Go, there are a lot of potential disadvantages they need to overcome to do that. On the light end, those comprise merely beating the friction of having to travel places to progress, which is a barrier that rabid Pokemon fans will conquer, but that might prove insurmountable in other situations.
