Augmented reality is an area which tremendous possibility, and the electricity to be truly transformative. Microsoft's HoloLens, which offers something very distinct, is a great example, and the mind reels at what HoloLens could become in several years with a lot more polish and hardware refinement. But to suggest the sort of AR Pokemon Go uses, using just your smartphone, is currently experiencing some watershed second, is nearly certainly overstating the case.

What makes this latest episode of the 20-year old Pokemon franchise so appealing is its considerable use of augmented reality (AR): players use their smartphones to show fanciful creatures in real life and then attempt to get them.
Other motives are playing Pokemon Go might show a risk to particular members of the citizenry (though there are counterexamples, also) or in particular regions. And while most of the danger so far is possible (and also paradoxically over-hyped), it is hardly totally imagined. And Go's popularity won't solve these problems for other smartphone-established AR games that hope to follow in its footsteps.
Other instances of similar games not based on world-famous IP exist, also. Shadow Cities, once the lead example of achievement in place-based gaming, shut down in October of 2013. Zombie apocalypse place-based MMO Please Stay Calm isn't shut down, but does not seem to have a really active user base (and programmers appear to have turned their focus to Halcyon 6, a retro space sim, instead.
Pokemon Go has finally been officially released in the UK, for both iOS and Android. No longer must you jump through sideloading hoops to catch them all.
The stream creators over at HackNY say they understand that this method of playing is technically against the game's terms of service. "If Niantic or Nintendo want to prohibit the account that we're playing with we would realize, but we presume they know this is all in great fun," they write in the stream's description.
As much as folks are appreciating Pokemon Go, there are a lot of possible drawbacks they must beat to do that. On the light end, those comprise only overcoming the friction of having to travel places to advance, which is a hurdle that rabid Pokemon fans will conquer, but that might prove insurmountable in other cases.
Android is the slightly easier alternative. This is the official variant of the game from the Play Store but uploaded to another repository that isn't locked.
I will walk three blocks for an opportunity to catch a Gyarados because I have an unhealthy fixation with a specific consumer brand, but would I go out of my way if there wasn't a nostalgia creature waiting for me at the end of the trek? No. A buddy working on one of the location-based mobile MMOs I mentioned above once told me that the largest thing they learned about user behavior was that people wanted to play largely in once place -- without moving around the world.
It's the first time an augmented reality video game has achieved such global success, and its initial impact on our society is rapidly becoming clear. We've got an invaluable opportunity to observe how new ways of interacting with technology change our lives and how they can be controlled.
