Now that the first game is here, we can see what all the fuss is about, and I've quite enjoyed the title. The truth is, in several ways, I think it is even cooler than Pokemon.
First, Yo-Kai Watch happens in our world, and your character has ordinary kid concerns. You are not some pre-teen who is tossed out into the wild world to face down dangerous creatures and train them to participate in eccentric gladiatorial fight rituals. You're a regular kid who needs to fit in with her (or his) friends and worries when her parents fight. Nevertheless, I am proposing that Pokemon games could spend a little more time dealing with stories that we can relate to as individuals.
What one other component of the game Niantic means to address is the lack of explanation it gives for certain game mechanisms. Addressing especially the rings that form around a Pokemon while catching them, Hanke admits that the game is not intentionally obtuse.

In Yo-Kai Watch you play a child who obtains the power to see and talk to Yokai, vibrant spirits who embody human characteristics and emotions. The battle system is real-time and completely distinct from Pokemon, and the flow of the story is entirely different. However, there are a couple of things about Yo-Kai Watch's setting and the story that I believe The Pokemon Company could learn from.
The folks in the Yo-Kai Watch world also feel more real than Pokemon game people. Everybody, from little kids to old people, in the Pokemon world, is obsessed with talking about Pokemon. Nearly everybody you speak to gives you meta-game advice about Pokemon or Pokemon-related services. They'ren't individuals; they're an extended tutorial delivery service. The people in Yo-Kai Watch, on the other hand, have distinct characters and difficulties you can select to help them with. Frequently these problems can be solved by summoning or dispelling a Yo Kai, but they don't understand that. They only understand their worker is inexplicably late for work, they lost an important toy, or they don't know how to ask out the object of their affection. In other words, you can see them as real individuals with interests unrelated to you and your quest. I would love to see more of that from.
Hanke noted that this doesn't mean the game will automatically receive major attributes with each upgrade, but Niantic is devoted to consistently working on and improving the game.
