Augmented reality is an area which great potential, and the power to be truly transformative. But to suggest the kind of AR Pokemon Go applies, using only your smartphone, is now experiencing some watershed moment, is nearly certainly overstating the case.

Other instances of similar games not based on world-famed IP exist, also. Darkness Cities, once the lead case of success in location-based gaming, shut down in October of 2013. Zombie apocalypse location-based MMO Please Stay Composed is not shut down, but doesn't seem to have a really active user base (and developers seem to have turned their focus to Halcyon 6, a retro space sim, instead.

The stream originators over at HackNY say they realize that this approach to playing is technically against the game's terms of service. "If Niantic or Nintendo want to prohibit the account that we are playing with we'd understand, but we assume they know this is all in good fun," they write in the stream's description.
As much as people are enjoying Pokemon Go, there are lots of potential downsides they have to beat to do so. On the light end, those include merely overcoming the friction of having to travel areas to advance, which is a hurdle that rabid Pokemon fans will conquer, but that might prove insurmountable in other situations.
Android is the marginally easier option. This is the official version of the game from the Play Shop but uploaded to another repository that'sn't locked.
