First, Yo-Kai Watch occurs in our world, and your character has regular kid concerns. You're not some pre teen who is tossed out into the crazy world to face down dangerous creatures and train them to participate in weird gladiatorial fight rites. You are a normal child who needs to fit in with her (or his) friends and stresses when her parents fight. Nonetheless, I'm suggesting that Pokemon games could spend a little more time coping with narratives that we can relate to as people. The brief episodes that make up the story of Yo-Kai Watch remind me of miniature anime episodes, and that is precisely what I've wanted to see the Pokemon games do a bit more of when it comes to narratives.
What one other element of the game Niantic intends to address is the lack of explanation it gives for specific game mechanics. Addressing particularly the rings that form around a Pokemon while catching them, Hanke discloses that the game is not intentionally obtuse.

Still, there are a few things about Yo-Kai Watch's setting and the story I think The Pokemon Company could learn from.
The folks in the Yo-Kai Watch world also feel more real than Pokemon game people. Everybody, from little kids to old folks, in the Pokemon world, is obsessed with talking about Pokemon. Nearly everybody you speak to gives you meta-game guidance about Pokemon or Pokemon-related services. They aren't individuals; they're an lengthy tutorial delivery service. The folks in Yo-Kai Watch, on the other hand, have distinct personalities and problems that you can pick to help them with. Frequently these difficulties can be solved by summoning or dispelling a Yo Kai, but they do not understand that.
