Now, obviously, it's not possible at this point to make Pokemon unexpectedly able to speak to their trainers, but the Pokemon anime certainly spends time helping us get to know certain Pokemon as creatures with particular personalities and issues.
In the immediate future, those upgrades will include Niantic focusing on stabilizing the servers and launching the game in other areas, having just formally released in the USA, New Zealand, and Australia.
Yo-Kai Watch is a bit like the new Pokemon for Japanese children, complete with its hugely-popular anime series. Now that the first game is here, we can see what all the fuss is about, and I've quite enjoyed the title. In fact, in a number of ways, I believe it's even cooler than Pokemon.
First, Yo-Kai Watch occurs in our world, and your character has normal kid worries. You're not some pre-teen who's tossed out into the wild world to face down dangerous creatures and train them to engage in weird gladiatorial combat rites. You're a regular child who desires to fit in with her (or his) friends and worries when her parents fight. However, I'm suggesting that Pokemon games could spend a bit more time dealing with narratives that we can relate to as people.
What one other component of the game Niantic intends to address is the lack of explanation it gives for specific game mechanisms. Addressing specifically the rings that form around a Pokemon while catching them, Hanke declares the game is not deliberately obtuse.
"We treat it as an ever-evolving game," Niantic CEO John Hanke said in an interview with Game Informer. "It's not something that simply minted and then issued on start day and not changed."
"We got a lot of feedback during the beta, we made a lot of progress, we fixed lots of bugs, but I'd put it into that kind of something we'd love to make that more so that it is more clear."
Now that Pokemon Go has correctly started --- in certain lands, at least ---Niantic Labs has no intention of leaving the game in its current state. Instead, the developer plans to upgrade the game consistently.
In Yo-Kai Watch you play a child who obtains the power to see and speak to Yo-Kai, vibrant natures who embody human characteristics and emotions. It's possible for you to recruit a ton of them to your side by defeating them in battle, but that is pretty much where the direct likeness to a Pokemon game endings. The battle system is real-time and totally different from Pokemon, and the flow of the story is entirely different. Still, there are a couple of things about Yo-Kai Watch's setting and the story that I believe The Pokemon Company could learn from.
The people in the Yo-Kai Watch world also feel more real than Pokemon game people. Everybody, from small kids to old folks, in the Pokemon world, is obsessed with talking about Pokemon. Nearly everybody you speak to gives you meta-game advice about Pokemon or Pokemon-related services. They'ren't people; they're an extended tutorial delivery service. The people in Yo-Kai Watch, on the other hand, have distinct characters and difficulties that you can select to help them with. Often these difficulties can be solved by summoning or dispelling a Yo-Kai, but they do not know that. They only understand their employee is inexplicably late for work, they lost an important toy, or they do not know how to ask out the target of their affection. To put it differently, you can see them as actual individuals with interests unrelated to you and your pursuit. I'd love to see more of that from.
Hanke noted that this doesn't mean the game will automatically receive major attributes with each upgrade, but Niantic is committed to consistently working on and improving the game. As Hanke has formerly said, he reiterates that features like trading and upgrades to PokeStops and gyms are among the strategies the programmer has in store.
